Mountain region

Driving distance: 420 km  Duration: full day  Departures: everyday. Departure from the city of Mendoza.

The traditional all season tour goes from Mendoza to the Chilean borderline on neatly paved Mendoza riverbank roads. This tour drives past huge Potrerillos Dam.

100 km far from Mendoza city lies Uspallata, a village that was settled by Huarpes tribes in Pre-hispanic times. The tour continues toward Picheuta historical bridge (General San Martin´s campaign landmark), and then toward Polvaredas and Punta de Vacas.

At Puente del Inca (2,720 m a.s.l.), Las Cuevas river has carved the mountains creating a natural bridge at the edge of which, there is a hot water spring. The Climber’s cemetery is located near this spot.

A short distance from the borderline, there is an interpretation center and a natural viewpoint offering great views of 6,962-m Aconcagua (Stone Sentry). An exit on Ruta Internacional allows us to approach beautiful Horcones lagoon and Aconcagua Provincial Park.

We’ll continue driving along Ruta Internacional toward the Chilean borderline where the district of Las Cuevas (3,200 m a.s.l.) is located. This European-style village houses the last train station on the Argentinean side.

Between Las Cuevas and the International Tunnel that leads to Chile, there is a road up which visitors can reach Cristo Redentor (Christ, the Redeemer) monument (4,200 m high) provided that weather conditions are favorable. This monument symbolizes Chilean and Argentinean brotherhood. The same road is taken to get back to the city of Mendoza.
