In the field of culture, Mendoza has given rise to various national and internationally famous personalities.
In literature, in the XIX Century, the poet Juan Gualberto Godoy stood out. He was a popular author who got inspired by “pulperos” and “payadores.” Among modern authors, poets Alfredo Bufano and Jorge Enrique Ramponi stand out. In the narrative field, plays by Juan Draghi Lucero, Abelardo Arias, Antonio Di Benedetto among others stand out. In the movie business, the most widely known name is that of Leonardo Favio, a director, and also a popular singer-songwriter, who is considered by some surveys “the best performer” in Argentina.
The visual arts have outstanding international artists such as Enrique Sobisch, Orlando Pardo, Roberto Azzoni (adopted as Mendocinean), Victor Delhez, Julio Giustozzi, José Bermudez, Luis Quesada, Marcelo Santángelo, or the Italian Sergio Sergi based in Mendoza. The three most famous painters are Fernando Fader (1882-1935), an impressionist; Carlos Alonso, dedicated to social critic; and Julio Le Parc, who in 1966 won the International Painting Prize at the Venice Biennale.
Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known as Quino, is a thinker, a graphic humorist and comics creator born in the Department of Guaymallén. Its most famous work is the comic Mafalda, originally published between 1964 and 1973.
