In 2006, Mendoza was admitted into the Great Wine Capitals Global Network – together with Bilbao-La Rioja (Spain), Bordeaux (Francia), Ciudad del Cabo (South Africa), Christchurch-South Island (New Zeland), Florencia-Tuscany (Italy), Mainz-Rheinhessen (Alemania), y Porto (Portugal) y San Francisco- Napa Valley (USA). This was the result of the significant development of wine tourism.
The Great Wine Capitals Global Network was created in 1998 for wine making regions to foster international wine tourism and cultural, economic and academic exchange among the nine wine capitals.
Being a member of this network means a greater publicity for wine making regions and their industry, as they take part in international wine tasting sessions, contests and events organized by the net. They will also establish relationships with leading wine promotion and marketing agencies in major wine-making countries, and receive updated information about other member cities.
The Mendoza committee of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network organizes the “Best of” contest every year. There are gold, silver and bronze medals for the various categories of wine tourism: wine tourism-related services, best wine-oriented theme restaurant, architecture, parks, gardens & environment, and best wine lodge.
