Driving distance: 690 km (from the city of Mendoza); 195 km (from San Rafael). Duration: 12-13 hours. Departure from the city of Mendoza.
After crossing the Northern Oasis and Valle de Uco, we’ll reach the district of San Rafael in southern Mendoza. The tour will take visitors to 25 de Mayo village-that used to be the main village in the region-, Galileo Vitale dam, Nihuil dam and Valle Grande dam, besides Atuel Canyon and its impressive geological forms.
Visitors may go rafting down Atuel river or sail across Valle Grande lake on a catamaran
Atuel Canyon is a fault, just like the Great Colorado Canyon. It impresses visitors with its size and peculiar colorful geological forms. The work of capricious nature has created shapes people compare with items such as a wax museum, a President’s chair, an alligator, old people, monsters, an enchanted city, a beggar, and hanging gardens, among others.
The tour includes visits to hydroelectric power stations on Atuel river. It then continues toward El Nihuil dam where water sports and fishing can be practiced. It also includes hospitable San Rafael city, which is the last stop before going back to Mendoza.
